Re: Mass Loading A7s, VERY inexpensive, reversible, needed -
Yeah but I didn't mention my listening impressions of his speakers. Worst sounding A7's or even Altec's I have ever heard. It reminded me of the old Bose saying "no highs no lows must be Bose". Thats what these sounded like. He had the stock sized port, so no real bass compared to the mids and highs. They sounded like total blah. That was what he liked though. He thought they sounded fantastic. I'm sure the granite tops were not hurting the sound, but they weren't helping enough:)

L.O.L. The guy had more money than brains ! I am sure there are TONS of poor sounding implementations, and some really good ones. Hopefully, we aspire to the later.
Just take my word on it as a friend, that its WORTH hearing and having, and you ( and other Forum Members ) give it a whirl this weekend and report back on Monday.

It's still used by a few DIYers on occasion and rather crudely by many today to lower driver Fs, raise Qts for specific apps. Cheap solder is the popular DIY wire.

Yes, Sir, but the speakers I am experimenting with, are out of about the 1950s, not 1930s ( 515B and 802D ).
Put all theory aside, all I ask for is people to use their ears to decide, this weekend!! 18 per enclosure.

Understood, I was responding to mah's a bit off topic use of mass loading. No one has to convince me of its audio related benefits, so only promote experimentation, though we'll have to 'agree to disagree' about keeping a cab stock except for possibly re-sale purposes, especially just about every manufacturer's cabs up until recently. As I just posted on the port thread, much less mass loading is required when properly braced and of course if the cab is already big/heavy enough, then none at all.

If it hums and/or has moving parts, it likely needs at least some, even that fine 09 BD player. My 23FD perks right up with a stack of old vinyl albums holding it down.

GM says this :

LOL. YES !! , just read your words above !!
My Pioneer Elite BPD-09FD weighs about 30 pounds. But I just looked at it, and sure enough, I had placed a $1.47 16.5 pound concrete square on it, maybe six months ago, when I was doing my A7 enclosures.
Here : http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...ayers/BDP-09FD
Also, much concrete is added on my 45 DIY DC SET amp, all over it !!
'Need to look-up 'yer 23FD next.

jeff,
are you saying a concrete block affects the performance of your blue ray player?
aside from dropping one on it
Re: Mass Loading A7s, VERY inexpensive, reversible, needed -
Everyone knows that mass loading your blue ray player also improves picture quality when watching a DVD
I recently mass loaded my microwave. Hot pockets are done in half the time and come out hotter than ever! :)

Of course, ask GM who put LPs on the top of his Pioneer player, I was responding to him. His Pioneer weighs about 8 pounds, mine weighs 29 pounds, but still !!! - 16.5 pounds ( one Lowes 11.7 square concrete slab ) was added - helped my unit some.
Mass loads the piece !! TRY it, $1.47 a block, Lowes, YOU DECIDE !!
Mass loading is wonderful on my DIY amps, as is 300 pounds plus on each A7. Mandatory " for me " IMHO.
Have fun listening, I do.

If you are going to pile LPs on your gear, I believe the STAX label ones work best. (Imagine a Smiley, here).
